Jordan Henderson has been joined by England team-mates Harry Kane, Jack Grealish and Declan Rice in offering their support to Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

The defender was booed by his own supporters at various points on Tuesday night during the Three Lions’ 3-0 win over Ivory Coast at Wembley.

Maguire, who is enduring a tough season at club level, has often reserved his best football for England in the last 12 months, including reaching the Euro 2020 final. However, that did not save him from the unjustified jeers that were directed his way on Tuesday, presumably with some supporters feeling his place in the team is not justified.

Despite that, Maguire put in a solid showing in the comfortable 3-0 victory, with Ollie Watkins, Raheem Sterling and Tyrone Mings netting in the friendly.

But after the game it was the treatment of Maguire which dominated the headlines, and Henderson was among the first to offer his support to the 29-year-old.

"I can’t get my head around what happened at Wembley tonight. Harry Maguire has been a colossus for England,” the Liverpool skipper said in a statement on social media. “Without him, the progress made at the last two tournaments would not have been possible.”

"To be booed at his home stadium for no reason? What have we become? What happened tonight was just wrong. As someone who wants to win with England I feel fortunate to share a dressing room with him. We all feel the same."

Kane, Grealish & Rice in agreement

Senior England players have also rallied around Maguire, with Kane tweeting on Wednesday to say the centre-back has the ‘full support’ of the squad.

“We’ve worked hard to rebuild our connection with @England fans in the last few years so to hear @HarryMaguire93 booed at Wembley before kick off was just not right,” the Tottenham Hotspur striker wrote.

“The fact that he’s been brilliant on the pitch and given us all so many great memories makes it even harder to understand. He doesn’t deserve that reception. He’s got full support in the changing room and should have the same from every England fan.”

Likewise, Declan Rice took to social media saying: “Total embarrassment from whoever boo’d tonight. @HarryMaguire93 has been incredible every single time he’s put on the England shirt.

“Absolute nonsense now it’s becoming. Back your own players. Especially with a Major tournament coming up.”

Speaking after the game, Jack Grealish said the entire squad disliked the fans’ treatment of Maguire n Tuesday.

“I think it’s ridiculous,” he said. “Harry’s been unbelievable for this country in the World Cup, the Euros, outstanding. I think even tonight he was brilliant. It wasn’t nice to hear boos for Harry and the whole team didn’t like it one bit.”
