Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth has insisted he is ‘really happy’ in his role at St James Park - despite links with a move to Manchester United.

The former Football Association ‘Director of Elite Development’ has been the subject of wholesome praise from Red Devils legend Gary Neville over the last week as the former United captain suggested he was sort of figure needed at his old club.

Ashworth has been linked with a role at Old Trafford in recent weeks and is believed to have admirers within the United hierarchy - but the Magpies sporting director has revealed he is ‘really enjoying the challenge’ he has taken on in the North East.

“I literally saw Gary when walking into the directors’ box and he was going down the tunnel,” Ashworth told The Mirror.

”I shouted, ‘Hello’ and that was it. I didn’t have a conversation with Gary. I know him and Phil (Neville) from their England days. He’s written some very kind things and thank you, Gary.”

When asked about links with a move to Old Trafford, Ashworth responded: “Same situation as Eddie (Howe), I think. I’m really happy, it’s a brilliant city, club and project. I’m thoroughly engaged in throwing myself into all of those things and really enjoying the challenge.”

Celtic cult hero reveals failed Manchester United and Liverpool bid

Former Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre has Manchester United and Liverpool both made attempts to lure him to the Premier League during his time with the Scottish giants.

The Honduras international moved to Glasgow in a £650,000 deal from Montagua in August 2010 and went on to claim 12 major honours during the first of two stints with the clubs.

However, things could have been very different for Izaguirre if a broken ankle had not changed the course of his career.

“Both Manchester United and Liverpool asked about me,” Izaguirre told Mundo Deportivo.

“I was the best full-back in the Scottish League with about 20 assists. Many offers came. Even my people told me at the beginning of the season not to play because I had already arranged (a move to) a team in England. But I broke my ankle and Celtic were great to me.

“They renewed my contract. And, then, I was so grateful to Celtic that I never wanted to leave the club.”
