Manchester United have reportedly made an approach for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, with Erik ten Hag said to be hoping the 20-year-old can help strengthen United’s defensive frailties.

The new Red Devils boss managed the centre-back during his time at Ajax and handed him his debut for the Dutch club.

Ajax are doing all they can to keep hold of their man but are reportedly willing to listen to offers of around £43m, according to the Guardian. Bayern Munich have also been mentioned as a possible suitor for Timber.

Ten Hag is said to be keen on signing a central defender. The club have been linked to numerous defenders around Europe, including Pau Torres.

After a poor season last term, the Manchester club will need plenty of additions to help them try and break back into the Champions League.

The 20-year-old defender still has two years left on his contract, signing for Ajax under Ten Hag in 2019.

The young centre-back played a pivotal role in the Dutch club’s defence when they won consecutive Eredivisie titles.

Rumours are circulating that Eric Bailly will leave Old Trafford this window, giving Timber the opportunity to fill the void left by the Ivorian.

The fluctuating form of United’s current defenders means Timber could be a key role for the club from the opening game of the Premier League season.

What could Timber bring to Old Trafford?

The Dutchman plays primarily as a central defender, but he has played at full-back at times for Ajax.

The new United manager will want to present a new style of play to the club and Timber will understand what is expected of him as a Ten Hag player.

Still only 20 years old, Timber is known for being very vocal on the pitch. The United defence has lacked leadership at times so this trait will be highly desired by Ten Hag for his new backline, if a deal was struck.

As a full-back, Timber has been impressive going forward when joining in with the Ajax attack, something United have lacked at right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The defender will provide plenty of competition for Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof. The battle for a starting place in the team will hopefully mean the other defenders raise their game for the new season.
