Manchester United striker set for League One loan - three more youngsters expected to depart

One of Manchester United’s most talented young strikers will represent another Greater Manchester club this season.

Manchester United forward Joe Hugill is set to join Wigan Athletic on loan, ManchesterWorld understands.

The striker, who scored in Saturday’s 2-0 friendly win over Rangers, attracted interest from several clubs in League One but has opted to remain in Greater Manchester and join Shaun Maloney’s side for the 2024/25 campaign.

While the paperwork has not yet been signed off, the move is expected to be concluded in the next 24 hours. A mid-season break clause has also been included in the loan.

Hugill signed for United in 2020, joining from boyhood club Sunderland, and has been a regular at Under-21 level for several years. The 20-year-old was part of the 2021 FA Youth Cup-winning side along with Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Hugill netted seven goals in nine league matches last season in the first half of the campaign, before joining Burton Albion on loan in January. He was less productive in Staffordshire, however, scoring just once in 18 games for the club.

The arrival of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna has pushed Hugill further down the pecking order at Old Trafford, although a first-team spot never looked likely this season. The forward’s contract at United runs to 2026, with the option of an additional year.

In addition to Hugill, youngsters Will Fish, Maxi Oyedele and Ethan Ennis are also expected to leave on loan this summer. Fish has spent the last two seasons at Hibernian, while Oyedele joined Forest Green on loan in the second half of last season.
