Jamie Redknapp believes Alejandro Garnacho has a similar trait to the one behind Wayne Rooney’s success at Manchester United.

It has been quite the week for Garnacho, who produced two assists against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup before scoring a dramatic stoppage time winner against Fuham on Sunday. The 18-year-old raced in behind the Cottagers back-line before producing a deft finish to secure all three points for the Red Devils.

Garnacho has now scored two and assisted as many in seven first team appearances, and his stock is quickly rising. The youngster will not head to the World Cup with either of Argentina or Spain - eligible to represent both - but as the break takes hold, there is immense excitement around his future. And Sky Sports pundit Redknapp believes the winger has something in common with United great Rooney.

“All the best players have the rascal gene - you don’t want to have a team of Gary Nevilles,” said Redknapp. “The greats have a bit of devilment about them. Look at Wayne Rooney.

“Sometimes, it doesn’t always add up, but they do things differently. You need match-winners and that’s what he is. If you go through the greats in history, most in history have a bit of genius and madness alongside it.

Fulham had played so well in the second half and if anything they might have edged it as the better team. But that big moment comes from Garnacho as it brought (Marcus) Rashford into the middle. United had lost the spark.

“Garnacho has the world at his feet now. There will be a clamour in his home country given the week he’s had but he’s missed out on the Argentina squad. He’s got plenty more World Cups to look forward to. It was one of those ‘wow’ Premier League moments. It was just a fantastic piece of play, the way he picks it up and plays a one-two with Eriksen.

“You hear so many rumours about this young man for a long while, about the talent he possesses and he’s just shown it on the world stage. It’s an unbelievable goal after the two assists in mid-week. How good must he be feeling right now?”
