Sofyan Amrabat insists he will play wherever he is needed by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after making his full debut for the club at left-back.

The 27-year-old joined United on deadline day but arrived at Old Trafford carrying an injury and only made his debut as a late substitute in the 1-0 victory at Burnley on Saturday. In that appearance he made a cameo appearance at left-back when replacing fellow loan arrival Sergio Reguilon.

The Morocco international was handed his full United debut in that position in Tuesday evening’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace, as Ten Hag’s men started the defence of their Carabao Cup title in perfect fashion.

Amrabat was moved into his more natural position of defensive midfield after Mason Mount was withdrawn at half time before coming off just after the hour.

Speaking after the game, Amrabat told Sky Sports: “I told the manager I will play where he needs me, where the team needs me, even if it is as a goalkeeper!

“I play where I can help the team, today it was left-back but I had a free role and I played a lot in the midfield. I like to touch the ball and have the ball always, I tried to give the team an extra option and I think it was OK.”

Before the game, Ten Hag described the midfielder as a “warrior” and said “he will play where the manager needs him”. Amrabat helped quell a handful of Palace attacks towards the end of the first half with United 2-0 up.

Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro struck twice in six first-half minutes to put United in control of the tie. Garnacho powered home from Diogo Dalot’s flat cross before Mount provided a pinpoint corner for Casemiro to head home.

Anthony Martial sealed the win for United 10 minutes into the second half as he finished brilliantly at the back post from Casemiro’s cross. The fourth round draw will take place tomorrow night after Manchester City’s clash at Newcastle United.
