‘I love that kid’ - Ruben Amorim names Manchester United player who is ‘perfect’ for his system
The Manchester United midfielder is back from injury and could have a big role to play under the new manager.
Ruben Amorim has claimed he ‘loves’ Mason Mount, who is perfect for his new system at Manchester United.
The Portuguese’s reign officially begins tomorrow (Sunday) when United take on Ipswich Town in the Premier League. Ahead of his big debut, much has been made of Amorim’s 3-4-3 shape, a formation which is rarely utilised by Premier League managers.
But one player who knows it well is Mason Mount, who played in a 3-4-3 system under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea and also has experience with Gareth Southgate at England. It’s why some feel the 25-year-old could adapt well to life under Amorim - and the new United manager only strengthened that opinion when speaking ahead of the Ipswich game.
“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” Amorim told United’s website. “You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.
“He played in this system [before], so it’s perfect for him. I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy.”
Mount’s United career has been underwhelming since his move from Chelsea last year for a fee of up to £60m. Injuries have blighted the first 18 months but, having returned just prior to the international break, the midfielder will hope for an extended run in the team.
“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea,” said Amorim.
Meanwhile, the former Sporting Lisbon boss gave an indication that Marcus Rashford could have a significant role to play during his tenure and claimed the boyhood red ‘can play the three positions in front’.
