He was offered a new contract at Man Utd but turned it down in order to pursue new opportunities.

There was a lot of controversy when Angel Gomes decided to leave Manchester United four years ago.

The 23-year-old had been at Old Trafford since he was six and was considered one of the most talented products of their youth academy in modern times. Yet, despite being offered a new deal to stay with his boyhood club, he turned it down as he went in search of regular playing time.

Eyebrows were raised when he joined French side Lille, before he immediately joined Portuguese club Boavista on a season-long loan. It's a risk that has firmly paid off.

Gomes played a key role as Boavista avoided relegation in his solitary season at the club and after three seasons with Lille, he has gradually established himself as one of their key players as they finished 4th in Ligue 1 and qualified for the Champions League play-offs.

To cap it off, the former United youngster has also finished the season as the joint leading assist-maker in Ligue 1, finishing above Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe in the rankings. Gomes finished with eight assists, alongside Ousmane Dembele, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Romain Del Castillo. Mbappe finished with seven, alongside both Bradley Barcola and Junya Ito.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Gomes this summer amid recent speculation surrounding his future. A report last week cited interest from Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Ham in the youngster, while United were also said to be keeping tabs on his plans.
