Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong since the end of last season.

The Red Devils are in need of some additions before the start of the new campaign and the Netherlands international has emerged as one of their top targets.

Erik ten Hag is looking to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad and De Jong is a player he knows well from his time at former club Ajax.

United made their first signing of the transfer window on Tuesday by landing full-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord, and they will be hoping that will set the ball rolling for the rest of their recruitment drive.

Here is what’s been reported recently about the possible transfer of De Jong.

De Jong is still under contract at Barcelona until the summer of 2026.

However, Marca claim he may have to part company due to ‘economic issues’ and with his current club sealing a deal for midfielder Franck Kessie on Tuesday, which could suggest he is on his way out.

United have reportedly agreed an initial €65m (£56.2m) plus add-ons that could take it to €85m (£72.74m), as reported in The Guardian, though discussions over personal terms are ongoing at this stage.

Another spanner in the works

Despite bringing in Kessie, Barcelona may want more additions through the door before they sanction De Jong’s exit.

According to journalist Gerard Romero, boss Xavi is keen on landing Bernando Silva from Manchester City, before letting the Dutchman leave.

It appears De Jong hasn’t shut the door on a move to Manchester but needs the green light now from Barcelona to take the next steps.

Open to the move

De Jong is said to be open to the switch to Old Trafford to take on a new challenge in his career.

He has been on the books at Barcelona for the past three years but they haven’t won La Liga since he moved to the Camp Nou.

The Guardian have reported that he is interested in the transfer which is a boost to the Premier League giants.
