Man Utd face Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.

A small selection of Manchester United fans unveiled an anti-Marcus Rashford banner in the away end during their Carabao Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Rashford has missed the last two United matches due to selection reasons and missed out on a place in the matchday squad against Tottenham on Thursday night, having also been omitted from the side that defeated Man City at the weekend.

The 27-year-old made headlines again on Tuesday when he revealed he was 'ready for a new challenge' in his career after two decades with his boyhood club. Amorim did his best to diffuse the situation when he insisted United were better with 'big talent' Rashford, though the uncertainty around his future was reignited when he missed out on a place in the squad against Tottenham.

Shortly before kick-off in North London, a white banner was unveiled in the United away end that read: 'Excuses. Ta, ra Marcus.' It appears to be a deliberate reference to the infamous banner that was unrolled when United lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace in December 1989, which urged Sir Alex Ferguson to resign.

Amorim could be asked about the banner when he speaks to the press after the match, but ahead of kick-off he explained why he had not selected Rashford for the second match in a matter of days.

"It's selection. The players I feel are ready to cope with the demands of playing a strong game," he told Sky Sports. "I try to visualise that all week and then make my selection." Is that the same reasons as the weekend? "It's always the same, with every player - not just Marcus."
