The Cristiano Ronaldo saga at Manchester United has taken another turn.

Ronaldo has been in the headlines throughout the summer and this season, linked with an exit before eventually staying put. The Portuguese superstar then grabbed the headlines again when he refused to come off the bench earlier this season, leaving the sideline and returning to the changing room before the end of the game.

It has been a baffling situation just over a year on from Ronaldo’s ‘fairytale return’ to the club where he achieved so much early in his career, though much of the noise has been around the veteran demanding an exit from Old Trafford. But in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo has claimed it is the club who have tried to push him through the exit doors.

Here’s what we have so far from the clips that have been released ahead of a full interview that will be broadcast on Wednesday and Thursday night at 8pm:

Piers Morgan: “They are trying to force you out?”

Cristiano Ronaldo: “Yes, not only the coach, but there are another two or three guys around the club.”

PM: “At the senior executive level?”

CR: ”Yes. I felt betrayed.”

PM: “That they are trying to get rid of you? Honestly, I shouldn’t say that, I don’t know. But listen, I don’t care. People should listen to the truth. Yes, I feel betrayed, and I felt that some people don’t want me here, not only this year, but last year, too.”

Ronaldo went on to add in a separate clip: “I don’t know what’s going on, but since Sir Alex Ferguson left, I have seen no evolution in the club. The progress is zero. For example, we have an interesting point about how Manchester United had to sack Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer). They bring in sporting director Ralf Rangnick, which nobody understands. This guy, he is not even a coach. A big club like Manchester United bringing in a sporting director surprised not only me, but the whole world.

“Nothing has changed. Not the pool or the jacuzzi, even the gym, even some points, the technology...the kitchen, the chefs, which are lovely persons, they stop in time which surprised me a lot. I thought I would see different things, like technology, infrastructure, but unfortunately, we see many things I used to see when I was 20, 21, 23, so this surprised me a lot.”
