Erik ten Hag revealed Casemiro picked up an injury in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils were comfortably dispatched 3-0 at Old Trafford, despite Eddie Howe making eight changes from last weekend’s draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and starting the match with five full-backs. Yet, Newcastle swotted aside an insipid United side, which only further piles the pressure on Ten Hag.

The compound matters, one of his most experienced players is now set to miss Saturday’s trip to Fulham. Casemiro was withdrawn at half-time in the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie, with Sofyan Amrabat replacing the former Real Madrid star.

Asked about the substitution after the game, Ten Hag said: “He was injured. Just before half-time, he got an injury. That’s why we had to take him off."

Pushed on whether Casemiro could be back for this weekend’s game at Craven Cottage, Ten Hag replied: "I can’t give an answer on that [now]. We have to wait 24 hours, but I think definitely for Saturday, he is out."

Casemiro has been dealing with an ankle injury over recent weeks, one that forced him to sit out the last two Premier League encounters, but Ten Hag didn’t explain whether the issue suffered on Wednesday was a fresh problem or a recurrence of the previous injury.

The 31-year-old has failed to have the same impact in his second season at United, as he did in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford. Casemiro was actually replaced at half-time in his last Premier League appearance, the 2-1 win over Brentford last month.
