Reported Manchester United managerial target Erik ten Hag has suggested that he will not consider his future at Ajax until Marc Overmars’ recent departure from the club has been properly processed.

The former Arsenal winger resigned from his role as the Dutch giants’ director of football after a series of “inappropriate messages” to female colleagues were uncovered.

Overmars has since apologised for his “unacceptable” behaviour, but his exit was confirmed despite him being just two months into a contract extension that was set to run until 2026.

The 48-year-old worked closely with ten Hag during their shared stint in Amsterdam, and his sudden departure has led to speculation over the Ajax boss’ next move.

United have been credited with an interest in appointing him as Ralf Rangnick’s permanent successor for some time now.

But it would appear that ten Hag is solely focused on dealing with the aftermath of Overmars’ exit for the time being.

What has ten Hag said about his future at Ajax?

Breaking his silence on Overmars’ departure, ten Hag told ESPN, as per De Telegraaf: “Marc Overmars and me were definitely a strong duo. But to think about this now... it’s not about me now. We need to process what happened.

“I will start looking at the consequences. I won’t think about my future now.”

He added: “I’m fine, but I know what you mean. We’ve had incredibly bad days, of course.

“I was totally stunned when I heard it. This is disastrous. Especially for the victims; the women. I have a hard time with the suffering that has been caused to them.

“Everyone processes this in their own way. I then withdraw a bit and am a bit quieter than usual.

“As a coach you naturally have to radiate energy, but that was difficult the last few days.”
