One of the favourites to take over the reins at Manchester United next season, Erik ten Hag, may be thinking about leaving Ajax, according to new reports.

This comes after the Dutch league leaders announced the immediate departure of its Director of Football, Arsenal and Premier League legend Marc Overmars.

Ten Hag is one of two main candidates to be appointed as Ralf Rangnick’s successor at Old Trafford, joining ex-Spurs and current PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino in the running for the permanent job.

Rangnick accepted the role on an interim basis ahead of a swtich to a consultancy role at the club for two years - sparking much debate about his successor.

Respected football journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Red Devils hold a firm interest in the services of ten Hag, and that recent developments could possibly push him out of the door at Ajax.

“Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are the two big names that Manchester United have on their list,” Romano confirmed on the Vibe with Five podcast.

“Also what happened with Overmars could maybe change the future of ten Hag.

“He was heavily involved in the project at Ajax, but with Overmars now leaving the club it could have a big impact on his future plans.”

Ten Hag has had a successful five-year reign at the Johan Cruyff Arena, with the club currently top of the Eredivisie and in the last 16 of the Champions League.

But as Romano stated, changes at boardroom level could quite possibly persuade the Dutchman to look for greener pastures.
