The Man Utd veteran was out-of-contract this summer but has agreed to an extra year at the club.

Manchester United have confirmed goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year deal at the club. The 38-year-old was out-of-contract this summer but has now agreed to stay at Old Trafford for another season, taking his second spell at the club into a fourth campaign.

Heaton, who came through the club's illustrious academy but never made a senior appearance, returned in 2021 and finally made his senior debut for his boyhood side later that year, against Young Boys in the Champions League.

His only other two United appearances came in the League Cup wins over Charlton Athletic and Nottingham Forest two seasons ago, keeping clean sheets on both occasions as Erik ten Hag's side went on to win the trophy.

United confirmed when their retained list was released at the start of the month that they were open to keeping both academy products at the club, though it always seemed unlikely they would agree to new terms until the managerial situation was clarified.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, he told club media: "I am delighted to continue my stay at my boyhood club. I still feel in great shape and I am ready to offer whatever the squad needs throughout the season ahead.

"In addition to on the pitch, I’m learning so much off it for my next steps, whatever that may be. But, first and foremost, I want to push the squad to build on our successes from last season."

Heaton is currently away with the England squad at the European Championship ahead of their quarter-final clash with Switzerland this weekend. The United shot-stopper was called up by manager Gareth Southgate to assist Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson at the tournament.
