The Red Devils have been interested in the forward since the start of the transfer window. They had an offer of £45m plus £10m in add-ons rejected in earlier June before an increased bid of £55m up front plus £7.5m in add-ons rebuffed.

Brentford pushed their valuation of Mbeumo towards £70m after seeing Antony Elanga join Newcastle United for £55m and Noni Madueke join Arsenal for £52m. They believed Mbeumo was worth a good chunk more than both those stars after he scored 20 goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League last campaign.

Bryan Mbeumo completes Manchester United medical

Giving an update on the player, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said on Sunday: “Bryan Mbeumo has just signed his five year deal plus option at Man United.

“Medical completed in the morning and Mbeumo can now be considered new United player after long saga.”

Mbeumo has been with Brentford for six years after joining the club back in August 2019. He has scored 70 goals and provided 51 assists in 242 games, representing a goal contribution every other game.

He had one year left on his deal with the Bees but there was an option to extend it by a further 12 months to 2027, meaning the West London club still had a strong hand during discussions.

Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur all eyed a move for the forward but he made it clear early on he only wanted to make the switch to Old Trafford. That made matters much easier for United when negotiating for the player as the likelihood of a Premier League rival hijacking their move was unlikely.
