Erik ten Hag's side started well in the first few minutes at Old Trafford before they were blown away by a brilliant Liverpool performance which was further amplified by a catalogue of individual errors. Casemiro was replaced at half-time after gifting two goals to Liverpool, while Kobbie Mainoo lost the ball poorly to give them their third after the restart.

While individual errors contributed to the three goals, there were also clear systematic errors that saw United totally outclassed by Arne Slot's side in only his third competitive match in charge of the club.

Speaking after the match, club captain Fernandes defended his teammates and praised their 'bravery' for trying to take risks in the first place.

"The goals are always self-inflicted," he told Sky Sports. "You need to commit a mistake to give them the goal. We don't need to be pointing fingers at everyone. that won't help us now. When you concede a goal you can't just point at one mistake. What's the point in saying Casemiro lost the ball or Kobbie [Mainoo] lost the ball? They lost the ball because they wanted to be brave. It's part of football. Don't make it individual.

"Casemiro is more experienced than me. I don't need to tell him anything, he knows what football is about. He's played for the two best clubs in the world. Kobbie is an excellent kid. I want him to try more and do this because it's part of his game. They are huge players for us and will keep being.”
