Some players have stood out more than others in Manchester United’s pre-season.

United have had a mixed pre-season so far, starting very well but suffering a setback on Saturday with a draw against Aston Villa.

Erik ten Hag is not expecting his men to be perfect just yet, but he did make his disappointment known as the new season approaches.

Still, there have been plenty of positives from the summer so far, and one of those positives is Anthony Martial, who has impressed since returning from a loan spell with Sevilla.

The Frenchman has scored in three of the four friendlies so far, and he may have already proven himself to his new boss amid uncertainty over his future.

Here is what we know so far.

Latest report

The latest report on Martial has come from transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who says Martial has already done enough to win over Ten Hag ahead of the new season.

“Erik ten Hag and Manchester United board want to keep Anthony Martial at the club this summer.

“The decision has been made internally and also communicated to the player. #MUFC Two clubs keen on signing him on loan but Man United have no intention to let him go, as of now. “

What has Ten Hag said?

Ten Hag made it clear earlier in the summer that there was going to be a place for Martial if the Frenchman applies himself properly.

“I’m sure he can come back even better,” said the United boss. “When he has the right focus and motivation and works hard, he will have production because he is a good player.

“When he has right focus, every day delivers much then he will have production. It’s up to him.”

What has Martial said?

We haven’t heard much from Martial since his return, with the Frenchman doing his talking on the pitch.

But after joining Sevilla on loan last season, he made it clear it was Ralf Rangnick who caused him to want to leave last season.

“When he arrived, my objective was to leave,” he told The Guardian. “I told him I wanted to leave and that’s it.

“He talked to me. He said that if you want to stay, with the way you are training if you continue to train like that, you will play. But my objective was that I wanted to leave, to have a new atmosphere, a new club.”
