It’s believed manager Ryan Lowe would like to bring the Spaniard back to Deepdale next season, but Fernandez has revealed he is not certain what the future holds for him, adding that is a decision for Erik ten Hag.

"I don’t know yet, it depends on Man United,” Fernandez told the Lancashire Evening Post, when asked about his future. “I have a contract there so I have to go back in pre-season and after pre-season we will see what happens there.

“Erik ten Hag has to choose. If I have a space there, it’s what I want for my football. If not, we will see what happens. I might have to go on loan again, so I don’t know.

“I have spoken with Ryan from the beginning, he has been very good with me. You can see that he’s close with the players but it doesn’t depend on him. I know he might want me for the next season but it doesn’t depend on him or me.”

Fernandez’s future could be impacted by United’s expected signing of England youth international Harry Amass. The teenage left-back is highly rated by the club and will likely sign from Watford in the summer.

Amass’ arrival will provide competition for Fernandez, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia firmly established as the club’s senior left-backs. Fernandez joined United from Real Madrid’s academy in 2020 and has earned two caps for Spain’s Under-19 side. Last season he won the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year award and was named on the bench for a Premier League match against Chelsea.
