Alan Shearer and Roy Keane are in agreement over a concerning Manchester United problem.

Erik ten Hag’s men have put together a less than ideal start, winning twice and losing twice, and the results only tell half the story. Even in the games United have won, they have not convinced, struggling in their opening weekend win over Wolves and going two goals behind against Nottingham Forest before coming back to win.

On Sunday, they were beaten by Arsenal away from home after conceding twice in stoppage time to lose 3-1, and the alarm bells are ringing as we head into the first international break.

United struggled in the early stages of last season following Ten Hag’s arrival, and despite significant spending over the course of the summer, the same trends appear to be playing out. There is no shortage of quality within the squad, but there appears to be a shortage of sheer will and fight.

At least that’s according to Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer, who told The Rest is Football: “They were terrible at the weekend, Man United. Until he (Ten Hag) sorts that conundrum out in midfield then they are going to continue to have problems because clearly those three in Casemiro, Mount and Fernandes hasn’t worked in the two games.

“They have been battered in both games in that department, overrun, out fought and out thought. There is big, big work there for them to improve.”

United legend Keane made a similar claim while speaking on Sky Sports after the Arsenal defeat, saying: “I said before the game, they were poor against Wolves but they got the result and they will be better today - they weren’t.

“They were fine for the first half hour but the game is about 90 minutes, and I know you are not going to dominate for that long, but you have to show some belief and desire and fight.”
