Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has called out current goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Red Devils fell to a late defeat to Arsenal on Sunday despite taking the lead through Marcus Rashford at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners responded quickly with a Martin Odegaard strike, and they went on to win the game in stoppage time thanks to goals from Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus, although it was the first of those that decided the game.

Rice’s winner came from a poorly-defended corner, with the ball breaking to the midfielder at the back post. Rice then took aim, and with the help of a slight deflection, he managed to beat Onana at the front post.

Onana was a big-money investment for United during the summer transfer window, with Erik ten Hag moving to replace David De Gea, who was allowed to leave at the end of his contract. But it’s going to take time for Onana to adapt to his new surroundings, and that has been proven with his early performances.

Still, former United keeper Schmeichel wasn’t impressed by what he saw from Onana for that second and all-important Arsenal goal.

Schmeichel said, as cited by the Express: “I’ve got no words…I’m shocked!

“It’s a terrible way to lose a game. United defended so badly for the corner at the end, Declan Rice had so much time and the goalkeeper should save it.”

Onana reached the Champions League final with Inter Milan last season, and he will be looking to regain his best form over the coming weeks as he settles in to life in Manchester, and indeed life in an Erik ten Hag team.
