It has been a dreadful start to the new era under Erik ten Hag and the former Ajax boss has lost his opening two matches in charge.

United find themselves bottom of the table and have Liverpool up next.

‘Recruitment has been terrible’....

The all-time Premier League top goal scorer Shearer has spoken about some of the reasons behind their poor start to this campaign and has said:

“It’s been years of failure, years of mismanagement, lack of leadership and the recruitment has been terrible.

“Is that the best they can perform? Last weekend and this weekend? It’s not.”

He added:

“They are in a mess and it is going to take time. It will take an unbelievable amount of money to get things right inside the football club and in terms of the right recruitment.

“It will take a lot of patience from the Manchester United fans because where they are now to where they want to be is miles away.”

Their boss has a big job on his hands to turn their fortunes around with pressure already starting to mount. After Liverpool next Monday, United have Southampton at home to end August.

They then have clashes against Leicester City, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Leeds United.

The club still has a few weeks left of this transfer window to go so there is still the opportunity to bring in some more players.

United have so far signed Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia this summer.
