Defending Premier League champions City are looking to once again win the title but how much - if any - business are they likely to do in a tricky month for clubs when it comes to new signings. The window opened on New Year's Day and closes February 1. We take a closer look at what the City boss Pep Guardiola has said and one potential exit.

What has Pep Guardiola said about January transfer window plans?

Speaking in mid-December, Guardiola said: "No. Right now, I don’t have anything in my mind. It depends on if they leave, or don’t leave. I don’t know.

"Some players stay, or some players leave, it depends on the amount in the squad, it depends on the young players we rely on them or not for some moments, we will see. I don’t think about that [transfers] for one second. Txiki [Begiristain] is in this role for this. We talk, but now we have a lot of games, and many, many important ones and I’m focused on that."

What transfer business is likely at Manchester City?

Kalvin Phillips’ future at Manchester City looks in doubt with the former Leeds United man expected to leave the Etihad Stadium. Phillips, who joined City in summer 2022, hasn’t been a regular under Guardiola during his time in Manchester and could seek a move away from the club this winter in order to play regular first-team football ahead of next summer’s European Championships.

Guardiola has been reluctant to see Phillips leave in the past, however, speaking last month, the 52-year-old admitted he didn’t know what the future would hold for the midfielder: "I don't know what's going to happen.” Guardiola said. “Now he's here and there are a lot of games until the end of January and hopefully he can help us."

Newcastle United have been touted as a potential destination for Phillips as they search for extra bodies in the winter window following an injury ravaged beginning to the campaign. Juventus have recently been listed as frontrunners for Phillips’ signature, however, the Telegraph report that Newcastle will look to move early for the 28-year-old in January in the hopes that City will sanction a loan move until the end of the season.
