Pep Guardiola reveals two areas Manchester City could look to strengthen in the transfer window

The Manchester City manager revealed the club might add greater depth in two positions where they currently lack options.

Pep Guardiola has discussed Manchester City’s transfer plans ahead of the final weeks of the summer window and revealed he could look to make additions in two key areas.

It has been a relatively quiet window so far for City, with Sergio Gomez departing and Savinho joining from Troyes in the only significant first-team deals. That will change in the coming days though, when Julian Alvarez’s transfer to Atletico Madrid goes through for a fee of up to £81.5m, an exit that will leave the Premier League champions light in terms of centre-forward options.

City have also operated without sufficient cover for Rodri over the last two years and the midfielder has previously spoken about the physical demands placed on him. While Nico O’Reilly and James McAtee are set to assume first-team roles this term, Guardiola admitted he may still look to the market for reinforcements in the areas where his squad lacks depth.

Asked about cover for Rodri, the City boss said: “We have Kova [Mateo Kovacic], we have Rico [Lewis], Nico O’Reilly, John [Stones] and Manu [Akanji] alongside another player can adapt in that position as well, so we have alternatives.

“We see the market,” he added. “But if I have some concerns I speak with Txiki [Begiristain].”

Asked to clarify whether he would consider signing a new midfielder, Guardiola replied: “Yeah, maybe.”

The City boss also admitted Kalvin Phillips, who played in all four pre-season games, could still move this summer. “We will see what happens,” he explained in Friday’s press conference ahead of the Community Shield against Manchester United.

As for signing another striker, Guardiola admitted it will be a challenge to attract a new arrival in that position given he will inevitably end up playing second fiddle behind Erling Haaland - the reason Alvarez decided to leave the club.

“We have alternatives and we will see if we need someone,” Guardiola said on City’s options up top. “We have very good players who can go there.

“If Erling doesn't play we don't have his particular skills but we have alternatives and we will see until the end of the market if we really need. Erling is not able to play all of the games so that's why we need another solution.

“We will see the chances at the end of the market, if a club needs to sell more than now for example. I don’t know now coming to the market and knowing that we make a good transfer.”

Alvarez’s departure will see City’s summer profit hit around the £100m mark but, despite that, Guardiola warned the Blues won’t pay over the odds for incoming players.

“In terms of finances, with Julian, people are waiting with the red carpet waiting to say ‘come here’ and that is why you have to see what happens. The club has done well in the past. Many players didn’t come because the club didn’t pay what the other club wanted for that player. The club will continue to do what is fair.”
