What did Man Utd fans chant about Phil Foden's Mum? Man City boss Pep Guardiola hits out over 'lack of class'

Man City player Phil Foden was subject to chants about his mum from some Man United fans on Sunday.

The Manchester derby failed to live up to it’s billing as Man United and Man City drew 0-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, leaving many fans on both sides of the divide frustrated with the lack of creativity.

It was a disappointment for Kevin De Bruyne, who was playing in his final Manchester derby after announcing that he’s leaving Man City at the end of the season following a 10-year spell at the club.

However, despite the build-up, and De Bruyne’s last derby, it was overshadowed by derogatory chants from Manchester United fans about Phil Foden’s mum, which City manager Pep Guardiola described as having a ‘lack of class’.

What did the Man United fans chant about Foden’s mum?

Foden was substituted off by Guardiola after 57 minutes in the game to a chorus of boos from the Man United fans at Old Trafford. However, before that, a section of the support could be heard chanting derogatory songs about his mum.

Some of the United fans were heard to chant: “Phil Foden, your mum is a s***” during the match, which was amplified when the attacker went over to take a corner early in the second half.

After the game, Man City manager Guardiola addressed the chants from some of the United fans. He said in his post-match interview: “Lack of class, but is not United it is the people. We are so exposed… managers, owners, football players especially. I do not understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. Lack of integrity, class and they should be ashamed. But it is what it is, it happens everywhere not just in UK.”

Foden took to Instagram after the game and posted five images of him from the game with the caption “We keep going”, choosing not to address the chants about his mum from the United fans.

He was replaced in the 57th minute by Jeremy Doku, who also failed to make much of an impact on the game at Old Trafford. City will now look ahead to their next game which comes against Crystal Palace.

Man City missed out on top-four chance

City are currently embroiled in a battle to earn a spot in the Champions League next season, as they sit fifth in the Premier League table, one point behind Chelsea in fourth place.

The Blues drew 0-0 to Brentford earlier on Sunday, meaning that if City had managed to find a winner against Man United, they would now be fourth in the table, one point ahead of Chelsea. Plus, as Nottingham Forest lost, they could be just three points behind Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in third.

According to Opta’s latest supercomputer simulation, City have a 53.48% chance to qualify for the Champions League next season, which is likely to include the top five places in the Premier League. It gives Chelsea a 26.13% chance, Newcastle a 37.85% chance and Nottingham Forest a 71.68% chance of landing a Champions League spot next season.

City have seven games left this season, in which they still need to play against Crystal Palace, Everton, Aston Villa, Wolves, Southampton, Bournemouth and Fulham.
