Manchester City should head into Saturday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United feeling slightly more refreshed than usual, after several senior players were given the night off against Bristol City.

Pep Guardiola’s men won 3-0 at Ashton Gate on Wednesday night, with Phil Foden netting a brace and Kevin De Bruyne scoring a superb third in the latter stages. Kyle Walker, Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and Erling Haaland were all unused substitutes in the FA Cup fifth-round win, while Jack Grealish only played the final 20 minutes.

But the Blues did pick up another injury against Bristol City, with Stefan Ortega having to be replaced at half-time after he sustained a hand injury, with Ederson coming in to replace the German.

He joins defenders John Stones and Aymeric Laporte as doubts ahead of the encounter with Newcastle. The latter has struggled with illness of late, while Stones has not played since January with a hamstring injury.

Asked about the trio ahead of the game, Guardiola hinted they might be available. “They already trained these days. They feel better, much better,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bruno Guimaraes should be back for the Magpies. The Brazilian suffered a recurrence of an ankle injury in last weekend’s loss to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final and had to be replaced.

Speaking in Friday’s press conference, Eddie Howe said Guimaraes has recovered from the problem. “Bruno is fine,” said the Newcastle boss. “I think he was in a bit of short-term pain but nothing that has impacted his training week. Off the top of my head, there are no other injuries.”

Joe Willock returned in Sunday’s final and could be in line for a start against the Premier League champions, while Matt Targett is available again, as are Anthony Gordon and Martin Dubravka, both of whom were cup-tied against United in the cup final.

Nick Pope is also back following the one-game suspension he served last week for his red card against Liverpool in the Magpies’ last Premier League match, while Emile Kraft and Matty Longstaff are both long-term injuries.
