Manchester City announced a 22-man squad for Wednesday European Super Cup in Greece.

Bernardo Silva was a surprise absentee for Manchester City, when the Blues’ squad was announced for Wednesday’s European Super Cup against Sevilla.

City revealed their travelling squad on Monday, with 22 players involved. Youngsters James McAtee and Oscar Bobb were named in the party, along with fringe members Sergio Gomez, Maximo Perrone and Cole Palmer.

But Silva was a shock omission, with the Portugal international reportedly missing out through illness. Journalist Jack Gaughan tweeted: “Bernardo Silva is unwell and not travelling to Athens for the Super Cup.”

Silva played the full 90 minutes on Friday as City began their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 win over recently promoted Burnley. Kevin De Bruyne also started that encounter but was forced off with a hamstring injury in the first half.

Speaking after the game, Pep Guardiola revealed it’s a recurrence of the hamstring problem which kept him out for the entirety of pre-season. “It’s his hamstring again. It’s the same position again and, I don’t know, it depends on the magnitude of the injury, but he will be out for a few weeks.”

Therefore, De Bruyne was not named in the 22-man squad for City on Monday, with Ruben Dias also missing as he recovers from a recent concussion. “Ruben was a concussion in the head,” Guardiola said after the Burnley win. “We were scared what happened so the protocol has to be seven days off.”

Joao Cancelo is the final absentee for City. The defender, who has attracted interest from Barcelona this summer, is expected to leave the European champions before the summer transfer window shuts. Cancelo was also not involved in the matchday squad against Burnley, and the Community Shield against Arsenal.

As for Sevilla, Marcao is injured, while Tanguy Nianzou, Ludwig Augustinsson, Adnan Janujaz, Thomas Delaney, Oscar Rodríguez, Oussama Idrissi have also been omitted from the Spanish side’s 25-man roster for the clash in Greece.
