Vincent Kompany has been named as the frontrunner to become the next Tottenham Hotspur manager following Antonio Conte’s departure last week.

The Italian left the club on Sunday night after an explosive rant in their final game before the international break as Spurs threw away a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 with relegation-threatened Southampton.

Julian Nagelsmann, sacked by Bayern Munich last week, and former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino have been among the leading names when it comes to replacing Conte.

But according to The Sun, Kompany is being eyed as Conte’s replacement by Daniel Levy following a hugely-impressive season with Burnley.

The Clarets are poised for an immediate return to the Premier League following last season’s relegation as they sit 13 points clear of Sheffield United in second and a 16 points above third-placed Middlesbrough.

Kompany played over 250 games for Man City after joining the club in 2008, as he left in 2019 after winning the Premier League title four times.

Despite the recent links to the Tottenham job, Kompany has been tipped to takeover Man City one day. Ahead of Burnley’s 6-0 loss to Pep Guardiola’s side in the FA Cup, the City boss said: “All of us here and the fans are happy (Kompany) will be back.

“He will be back sooner or later. His destiny to be the manager of Manchester City is already written in the stars. It’s going to happen, I don’t know when but it is going to happen I am pretty sure.

“It is my feeling, maybe I am wrong. He has the attributes, work ethic, knowledge of the game, well respected, experienced.

“Doing what he has done is so difficult and he is doing really well. He knows the club, the environment, the fans, what our people need. The destiny is there.”

Assistant Christian Stellini will take charge at Tottenham until the end of the season, with Ryan Mason as his assistant, while Luis Enrique has also been linked with the role but has appeared to rule himself out of the running.

He said earlier this week: “I would like to go to England to work. But I don’t see myself in the Premier League in July because I would like to go to a team there that can do important things and that’s very difficult. I wouldn’t go to any Premier League team.

“I have had offers from national teams but not from clubs. It would have to be a very important team to take it, although it would be very difficult for me to face Spain. I don’t know if I will be ready.”
