Man City icon could take 'significant pay cut' to seal stunning summer move to former club


Manchester City are trying to focus all their attention on qualifying for the Champions League next season, and ending what has been a disappointing year at the Etihad on a high.
However, in recent weeks, the club has been dominated by the news that midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is going to leave after 10 years with City, as his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Hide AdThe Belgian has expressed his desire to still play at a high level, with any move to Saudi Arabia looking unlikely, so there is a possibility that the 33-year-old could be in the Premier League still next season.
De Bruyne could see a return to Chelsea
The midfielder began his career with KRC Genk in Belgium before he was scouted by Chelsea and brought to the Premier League in 2012. However, he failed to make an impact at Stamford Bridge and so saw a number of loan moves before making a permanent move to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
After finding a lot of success at Wolfsburg, City then decided to sign him for £65m in 2015, and the rest is history. However, reports have suggested that De Bruyne could see a return to Chelsea if he decides to stay in the Premier League. According to Football Insider, speculation about a move back to Chelsea has emerged, however, they report that the Blues wouldn’t be able to offer a wage anywhere near as close to the likes of the Saudi Pro League and the MLS.
However, if De Bruyne wants to stay in the Premier League, it could be an intriguing move, considering his connection to Chelsea, and his relationship with Blues manager Enzo Maresca, who previously coached him as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at City.

Many assumed that when it was announced De Bruyne would leave the Etihad, that it was his decision to move on, after struggling for form more and fitness this season. He’s made 23 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals and providing seven assists.
However, it was reportedly Man City that made the decision not to extend his contract, something that the Belgian was surprised by. He told BBC Sport over the weekend: “I have not had any offer the whole year, they just took a decision.
“Obviously, I was a bit surprised, but I just have to accept it. Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I'm showing, but I understand clubs have to make decisions."
