Manchester City return to Premier League action on Wednesday when they travel to Leeds United.

The champions will head to Elland Road without two key players in Ruben Dias and Julian Alvrez, both of whom are expected to miss out. The latter is still not back following his exploits at the World Cup, with Pep Guardiola confirming the Argentinian is likely to return around the new year.

The Catalan also revealed after the Carabao Cup win over Liverpool that Dias is out with a hamstring injury, while Guardiola also claimed Kalvin Phillips returned to the club from international duty lacking the required fitness to train and play matches.

“He’s not injured. He arrived overweight,” said the City manager. “I don’t know [why]. He didn’t arrive in the condition to do training sessions and to play.

“That’s why he cannot play. When he will be ready, he will play, because we need him, we need him a lot.”

Guardiola also gave an update on Erling Haaland’s fitness after the foot injury he suffered in October, and revealed the attacker is ‘much better’ following the World Cup break. “The doctor said he damaged his ligaments in his foot and it’s so painful,” explained the 51-year-old.

“It’s not easy to recover, that’s why he struggled. But muscular issues… it’s perfect and now it’s much, much better; now it’s a question of time. Of course we need him and, yeah, it’s good.”

As for Leeds, Stuart Dallas and Luis Sinisterra are ruled out with long-term injuries, while Tyler Adams is suspended due to the red card he received against Tottenham Hotspur prior to the World Cup break.

Jesse Marsch also confirmed in his pre-match press conference that he is hopeful Illan Meslier, Liam Cooper, Mateusz Klich, Jack Harrison, Crysencio Summerville, Rodrigo and Patrick Bamford will all be back in training ahead of the City clash, but all eight remain doubts, along with Archie Gray who has recently been sidelined with an ankle issue.

Ruled out: Dallas, Adams, Sinisterra (Leeds); Dias, Alvarez (City)

Doubtful: Meslier, Cooper, Klich, Harrison, Summerville, Gray, Rodrigo, Bamford (Leeds); Phillips (City)
