Newcastle United remain interested in signing Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips despite no deal being secured in the first week of the January transfer market.

The Telegraph claimed in late December that the midfielder’s switch to St James’ Park was expected to be concluded swiftly, but no news was forthcoming at the beginning of January.

ManchesterWorld reported in November that there is interest from Juventus and Newcastle in the player, with a loan move more likely in the mid-season window than a permanent deal. But on Sunday, Fabrizio Romano claimed Juventus have now withdrawn their interest.

“Juventus have no intention to proceed for Kalvin Phillips deal at current conditions after talks with Man City on loan fee/salary coverage,” the Italian transfer journalist wrote on X. “Newcastle remain interested in Kalvin Phillips, race open to more clubs.”

i reported last week that Paris Saint-Germain, Fulham and Crystal Palace are also monitoring the situation, with Phillips keen to move in January for the sake of his England career. With just 10 appearances and two starts all season, the ex-Leeds United man is at risk of losing his spot in the international squad ahead of this summer's Euro 2024.

Phillips also wasn’t involved in City’s matchday group for the 5-0 FA Cup win against Huddersfield Town on Sunday. The 28-year-old missed out through illness, but his lack of involvement also means he is not cup-tied should he join another Premier League side in January. Newcastle, for instance, will take part in the fourth round of the competition after beating Sunderland 3-0 on Saturday.

Asked about Phillips’ future ahead of the Huddersfield encounter, Guardiola replied: “I said many times, I don’t know,”.

“Txiki [Begiristain] is there and what is going to happen will happen. I’m not going to anticipate anything here because I don’t know the desires of the players. Some of them I know and some I don’t know.”
