Manchester City are overwhelming favourites to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals after beating Copenhagen 3-1 on Tuesday.

The convincing away win in the first leg of the last-16 tie was achieved thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden, while Magnus Mattsson capitalised on an Ederson error in the 34th minute to score Copenhagen’s only goal of the night.

In addition to City taking a commanding position in the two-legged tie, Pep Guardiola’s side also recorded a ninth consecutive win in the Champions League victory, which is a record for an English side in the competition.

The run stretches back to the semi-finals last season when City drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in the first leg, before winning 4-0 at the Etihad a week later to begin the winning run in Europe. The Blues also won the subsequent final against Inter Milan this season’s six group-stage games and the first-leg win in Denmark to break the record.

City also became the first team to score three or more goals in seven straight Champions League matches, setting another new record on the night. The Blues managed to net three times in every single group-stage game this season (against Red Star Belgrade, Young Boys and RB Leipzig), in addition to three netted against Copenhagen.

Foden was one of City’s standout players once again on Tuesday, in what was his 50th Champions League appearance. He became just 25th English player to achieve that milestone and at 23 years & 261 days, is the youngest player on that esteemed list.
