Man City player ratings gallery vs Real Madrid - Three players score 7/10 as five get 6/10 in 1-1 draw

Vinicius Junior and Kevin De Bruyne scored the goals in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

Manchester City and Real Madrid have set up an intriguing Champions League semi-final second leg next week, after the first meeting at the Bernabeu on Tuesday. The sides drew 1-1 in a tense game that didn’t produce many clear-cut scoring opportunities in the Spanish capital.

It was a bright start from City, who tested Thibaut Courtois four times in the opening 20 minutes. The ex-Chelsea goalkeeper kept out a curled effort from Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri’s shot from distance and then two Erling Haaland attempts.

But the Blues’ dominance abated as the half continued, and when the first goal came it was via Madrid’s dangerman Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian allowed the ball to roll across his body and, from the edge of the box, fired an effort that flew past Ederson.

That proved to be the final chance of the first half, but the second period began with John Stones sliding in to block Karim Benzema’s shot, while Jack Grealish also deflected Rodrygo’s attempt. As for City, De Bruyne tested Courtois from outside the area, while David Alaba’s last-ditch challenge stopped Haaland as he bore down on goal.

After a back-and-forth spell, Kevin De Bruyne grabbed a vital equaliser when he finished first time from around 20 yards with a powerful strike that gave Courtois no chance.

Real did go close from David Alba’s free-kick that flew wide on 73 minutes, while Ederson made a good stop to keep out Benzema’s header soon after. The City stopper reserved his best save of the game to the 90th minute, when he got a hand to Aurelien Tchouameni’s rocket from long range, which proved to be the final chance of a tight game.
