MK Dons are ‘discussing’ a deal with Manchester City for midfielder Matt Smith, according to reports.

The Wales international is currently on loan with Hull City, but the Dons are hoping to tempt him to drop down to League One on deadline day.

According to the Daily Mail’s Adrian Kajumba, the third-tier side are in talks with City over a permanent deal for the midfielder.

Smith has struggled for game-time at Hull, only making 10 appearances for the Tigers during the first half of the season.

The 22-year-old is no stranger to League One, having spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Doncaster Rovers.

How likely is the deal to go ahead?

Given his lack of game-time at Hull and their recent signing of Regan Slater, it’s likely Smith will depart the MKM Stadium before the 11pm deadline.

The Wales international will want to play as many minutes as possible in the second half of the season, in order to gain a recall to his nations’ set up.

MK Dons’ appeal

A move to Milton Keynes could be a good one for Smith, with the club sat fourth in the third-tier.

The Dons have won four of their last five league games, most recently a 1-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers.

If the deal goes ahead, Smith will be the third Sky Blues’ player to leave the Etihad Stadium this month on a permanent deal, following the departures of Ferran Torres and Patrick Roberts.
