Uefa are reportedly considering switching the final venue for this season’s Champions League final, a decision that could have a huge impact on Manchester City fans.

Pep Guardiola’s side will learn on Wednesday night if they have qualified for a second final in Europe’s premier competition, with the semi-final second leg to be played against Real Madrid at the Etihad after a 1-1 draw in Spain this week.

City are favourites to progress to the final on 10 June at the expense of Carlo Ancelotti’s side, which is currently due to be held in Istanbul. However, given the possibility of civil unrest in the Turkish city due to the upcoming national elections, Uefa are already considering the possibility of moving the final.

As per the Daily Mail, Lisbon’s Stadium of Light has been identified as a potential alternative, with Uefa already ‘holding informal talks’ with Portuguese authorities about possibly switching the location of the Champions League final.

The Mail add there is reluctance from Uefa to move the final away from Istanbul for a third time in four years. The showpiece event in 2020 and 2021 was changed from the Turkish capital due to Covid-19, with Portugal selected as the replacement on both occasions.

The first round of voting in the Turkish elections takes place this weekend, with a second round to be staged on 28 May, less than two weeks before the Champions League final. Should President Erdogan’s two-decade reign come to an end in the elections, it is anticipated there could be widespread unrest in the country, which may impact a final held in Istanbul.
