Aymeric Laporte reacts to PFA Team of the Year omission as Man City & Man Utd stars selected

Manchester City and Manchester United players made up four of the XI from the 2021/22 season.

Manchester City and Manchester United both had players included in the 2021/22 PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

Despite finishing top of the league on the final day of the season, only three City players have been included in the XI, which is something of a surprise given second-place Liverpool had six stars involved.

Some of the shock City omissions included Aymeric Laporte, Rodri, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden. Elsewhere, Declan Rice, Heung-min Son and Jarrod Bowen were among the notable absteenees from the team.

Laporte, in particular, seemed shocked by his lack of selection and tweeted a Jose Mouinho GIF on Friday morning saying: “I prefer not to speak. If I speak - big trouble.”

However, one man who was included in the PFA team was Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal star, who netted 18 Premier League goals last term, was the sole United player selected.

When it comes to individual awards, Mohamed Salah scooped his second PFA Player of the Year award, and the second end-of-season accolade he claimed in 2021/22 after winning the FWA Footballer of the Year.

It was Kevin De Bruyne who won the Premier League Player of the Year, the second of the three awards to be handed out, in May.

Elsewhere in the PFA awards, Foden won the PFA Young Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year.

“I’m really honoured to be honest, especially to win it back-to-back,” he told the PFA. “It shows that I’ve come a long way this year with the consistency of my game, and I’m really pleased to win it again.

“All the best players in the world have got to show consistency and keep performing at the higher level, and this year I’ve just tried to do that and try and help my team as much as possible

“Hopefully I can win the main award in the future,” he added. “But it’s all about taking small steps and improving.”
