Manchester United fans have been sharing frank views on Cristiano Ronaldo’s TV interview with Piers Morgan.

#RonaldoInterview was trending on social media last night as the first of two interviews with Morgan went live, after days of clips teasing the programme’s release. Ronaldo was critical of the Glazers ownership of the club, of interim manager Ralf Rangnick, and a number of team mates - but came out in support of former bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Fans were quick to comment in large numbers on social media while watching the explosive interview unfold - and opinion was mixed, with some reckoning the Portugeuse star had spoiled his long relationship with the club and its supporters for good, but others claiming he was right to give his honest opinion on what’s wrong at the club - and that they agreed with most of his criticisms.

Player turned pundit Jamie Carragher tweeted: “99% of United fans will be on the side of Erik ten Hag, which shows how badly Ronaldo has handled this.”

@Jake1981 tweeted: “Lost all respect for Ronaldo. Yes, some of the facts about the club are true but to turn publicly on your manager, that’s a no go.”

@mojeda101 added: “His legacy? Tarnished. Couldn’t be happier we are getting rid of him. He made us worse and that’s a fact.”

Others criticised presenter Morgan for ‘siding’ with Ronaldo and not putting his comments under sufficient scrutiny, or ‘using’ the footballer’s name to grab headlines for his show.

@Cleaver_Harry tweeted: “This Ronaldo interview may be fascinating, but @piersmorgan is also failing as an interviewer. Not holding it to Ronaldo in the slightest, not questioning anything he says. Once again, top of the class in sucking up.”

Meanwhile, some of the most-liked tweets from last night revealed a show of support for Ronaldo from fans.

@MadridPreeti tweeted: “99 % of what Cristiano Ronaldo said in that Interview should not upset Manchester United fans in any way, he has criticised the structure, the board , the CEO for bad sporting decisions, everything you’d want him to do.”

In a similar vein, @Alphautd commented in tweet which was liked 10,000 times: “I’m watching this Ronaldo interview. I may lose followers here but this guy is a red. He’s saying what needs to be said.”

@Karol_Arron added: “Ronaldo is coming across surprisingly well in this interview. I can’t help but think the drip fed sound bites took away all the context. This isn’t just to force a move. It’s also trying to force Man United to move. Fair play.”

Morgan claimed today he was on course for the most watched footballer interview in history, after noting four million people had also watched the recording on YouTube already. You can find out how to watch the second part of the TV interview here.
