Which parts of Greater Manchester have the most - and fewest - under 18s vaccinated?

The summer holidays are almost over for teenagers in Greater Manchesterand an increasing number will be heading back to the classroom with a Covid vaccine in their arm.

Despite more than 77% of the UK’s adult population now being vaccinated against coronavirus, the roll-out is still in the early stages for under-18s.

Who can get jabs now?

While Covid symptoms in children are largely asymptomatic or mild, vaccination opened for those aged 16 and 17 three weeks ago.

The USA and countries in the EU including France, Spain and Italy are currently offering the jabs to over 12s, but the UK is proving more hesitant.

Vaccinations are currently only being offered to children aged 12 to 15 who are at higher risk from coronavirus or who live with someone who has a suppressed immune system.

Across England, more than half a million under-18s have now been vaccinated against coronavirus, representing 14% of the 12-17 population.

What’s happening locally?

Across Greater Manchester, 25, 943 people aged under 18 had been given their first dose as of 22 August - around 13% of 12 to 17 year olds in the area.

Here are the rates broken down by borough up to that date, with estimated percentages of the population vaccinated in descending order. (Note: population figures are mid-year estimates from the Office for National Statistics so may not be exact.)

2. Wigan: 3,625 children had first dose: 16.1% of 12-17 year-olds

3. Rochdale: 2,430 children had first does: 14.7% of of 12-17year-olds

4. Trafford: 2,525 children had first dose: 13.6% of 12-17 year-olds

5. Tameside: 2,061 children had first dose: 13.3% of 12-17 year-olds

6. Stockport: 2,645 children had first dose: 13.1% of 12-17 year-olds

7. Bury: 1,598 children had first dose: 11.6% of 12-17 year-olds

8. Manchester: 3,749 children had first dose: 10.5% of 12-17 year-olds

9. Salford: 1,632 children had first dose: 9.9% of 12-17 year-olds

10. Oldham: 1,549 children had first dose: 8.1% of 12-17 year-olds.
