Ex-Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is returning to the city on Wednesday night for the global premiere of his new Amazon Prime film.

However, ahead of the film launch, he told journalists he had struggled with his mental health and spells of excessive driking at times during his prolific playing career.

He recalled: “I couldn’t go into the likes of Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and say ‘listen, I’m struggling here.’”

The new film also features Rooney talking about key points in his life, from growing up in Liverpool to facing media scrutiny as a young player for his off-field behaviour.

Directed by Bafta award-winner Matt Smith, it also includes interviews with former United stars David Beckham, Gary Neville, and Rio Ferdinand.

  • The film will be available to view on Amazon Prime from Friday (11 February). Watch the trailer above.
