Large parts of England are set to be hit by a thunderstorm today as temperatures continue to rise as we approach summer.

Manchester doesn’t look like it will be spared from the stormy weather, and a Met Office warning covers the Greater Manchester region.

Ahead of the storm warning coming into place, here’s what you need to know including how long the warning is in place, what the weather will be like in Manchester today, and when the warning is expected to end.

What is the weather warning?

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for areas of England which can expect to see the worst of the stormy weather.

In Manchester, this will come into place at 1pm and is set to last until 10pm.

The warning is a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms.

The Met Office has also issued information about what impact the stormy weather may have on the region.

  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Delays to train services are possible
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is likely
  • A chance of some flooding of homes and businesses or some damage to a few buildings or structures from lightning strikes.

If you do need to travel around this time, the Met Office also has guidance on how this can be done safely.

What is the forecast for today in Manchester?

A cloudy start to the day in Manchester will be replaced by the stormy weather which is set to hit the region this afternoon.

2pm is when the worst of the stormy weather is expected to reach Manchester, and at this point in the day it is expected to have a 60% chance of rain as well as thunder and lightning forecast.

The temperature should reach a high of 19°C in the afternoon, and even after the worst of the stormy weather has passed by 2pm.

Sunshine and showers will be the name of the game this afternoon, but the sun may disappear by 6pm but showers will remain.

Once the warning ends at 10pm, there will still be a high temperature of around 15°C and any remaining showers will have moved on.

Ahead of the weather warning coming into place, The Met Office has released the summary of what we can expect throughout the day and into tonight.

Today:

Cloudy skies with outbreaks of rain this morning, turning heavy at times. Rain will ease a little in the afternoon, but there will still be some heavy showers around, possibly thundery. Drier and brighter to end the day. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

Showers clearing this evening to leave a dry night. Cloud will break up to give some clear spells, but it will stay fairly mild. Minimum temperature 10 °C.
