Supermarket opening times over Christmas 2021: When will Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Tesco and Aldi be open?

We look at when the major supermarket chains in Manchester will be open over Christmas and New Year week - and which will be closed on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

If you need to grab some last-minute cranberry sauce on Christmas Eve or run out of milk on Boxing Day, it’s helpful to know if stores are open before you make a mercy dash.

All supermarket chains operate at different hours than usual over the final few days of the year and it’s always best to check what is open before you leave the house on any given day, but here is a guide to what the big chains have said their plans are this Christmas and New Year.

Aldi plans to open into stores from 7am until 10pm between Monday December 20 and December 23. Christmas Eve sees stores open from 7am to 6pm, allowing staff to make an earlier dart.

The chain is keeping stores closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, before opening times change to 8am until 8pm between Monday 27 December and Thursday 30 December.

Anyone looking for a last minute New Year’s Eve party shop can visit between 8am and 6 pm on 31 December before New Year’s Day sees all stores closed.

Aldi has warned that opening times may vary by location, and shoppers should check signs at their local store.

Asda

All ASDA’s are closed on Saturday. During this time ASDA are offering quieter shopping from 2:00PM - 3:00PM, where there will be reduced noise from their radio and tannoy announcements.

ASDA Living is open:

Tuesday - Thursday the store is open from 8:00AM - 9:00PM

Christmas eve the store will open at 8:00AM and close at 5:00PM.

The store will open on Boxing day at 11:00AM and close at 5:00PM.

ASDA Hulme is open:

Tuesday - Thursday the store is open from 6:00AM - 12:00AM

Christmas eve the store will open at 8:00AM and close at 7:00PM.

According to the Asda website this store is open 24 hours.

Lidl

The discounter has advised although times may vary by location, stores are likely to be open from 7am until 10pm until Christmas Eve, when most stores will reduce their hours to 7am to 6pm.

All stores will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day with stores also changing their opening times on New Year’s Eve, when most stores are open til 6pm. The shops will shut on New Year’s Day.

Morrisons

Morrisons says opening times will vary across stores, but the majority will see extended opening hours of 6am until midnight from 20-23 December.

Christmas Eve will see stores open between 6am until 6pm, before two days of closures across Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Normal opening hours are then expected until 31 December when stores will be open between 7am and 6pm, and then 9am until 6pm on New Year’s Day.

Sainsbury’s

In the build up to Christmas, Sainsbury’s will be open between 6am and 11pm across most stores with Christmas Eve seeing larger stores open between 7am until 7pm.

Most smaller convenience stores from the chain will remain open until 9pm with no locations open across Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Larger stores will be open for 12 hours from 7am – 7pm across New Year’s Eve, with smaller Sainsbury’s convenience stores open until 9pm, before most stores open from 8am to 8pm on New Year’s Day.

Sainsbury’s also advised checking in-store posters for any deviations in these times.

Tesco

Tesco will also be operating under slightly different opening hours across the festive season. They have released overall operating hours but advise that you check with your local store as some may be operating on different hours

Friday 21 December - 6AM - 7PM
