Manchester was transformed into a sea of red and white on St George’s Day as the patron saint of England was celebrated with a spectacular parade.
A procession made up of community groups, military vehicles, scooters and motorbikes, pipe and brass bands and more made its way from Miles Platting to the city centre and back again under somewhat grey skies on Sunday (23 April).
A group of volunteers based in the Miles Platting area organise the parade which has now been running for more than 15 years. The Lord Mayor of Manchester attended the event while parade participants included those who dressed up as King Henry VIII and his six wives from the Tudor period.
St George was born in Cappadocia in what is now Turkey in the fourth century AD and was probably an officer in the Roman army before he became a Christian martyr after being put to death during a period of religious persecution. Although St George’s Day is not a bank holiday, in recent years there has been a revival of interest in it and bodies including English Heritage have promoted it while events have been held celebrating England’s arts,traditions and culture.
