Manchester City Council has brought in the new speed limit from the Chester Road end to the Pin Mill Brow Junction for a period of up to 18 months but could says it could become a permanent change if further work which will be done supports that.

What is the speed limit change and why has it been brought in?

The 30mph speed limit along the Mancunian Way from Chester Road to Pin Mill Brow Junction came into force at 9pm on Monday (14 February).

It applies to cars travelling in both directions.

The council’s highways team says there have been 29 incidents recorded on the road since 2018.

These included a crash in January this year in which 17-year-old Nadia Yusuf died after a Mercedes she was travelling in struck a railway bridge.

The council says that while the road is reduced to a 30mph limit it will be carrying out further work.

This will help decide if a permanent speed reduction is required.

Recent incidents on Mancunian Way have also resulted in crash barriers becoming damaged and needing repairs.

It will therefore be closed completely over the weekend of 12 March and 13 March for this work to take place and for a full road inspection to be done.

What has been said about the change of speed limit?

Coun Emma Taylor, Manchester City Council’s assistant executive member for transport, said: “Our priority will always be road safety and what has become all too clear in recent years is that the Mancunian Way is a particularly hazardous stretch of road.

“I would ask motorists to please respect the new speed limit while it is in force and give themselves more time to complete journeys where necessary, especially during busier periods.

“The Mancunian Way will also be closed in March for its annual maintenance and inspection weekend, which will allow us to undertake any necessary repairs in a safe and controlled way.”
