Referee assault in Wigan: man arrested after incident at Wigan Rose vs Platt Bridge game

Police have arrested a 24-year-old man today on suspicion of assault following an attack on a referee in a football game.

Dave Bradshaw was in charge of the South Lancs Counties fixture between Wigan Rose vs Platt Bridge on Sunday when he gave a red card to a Platt Bridge player.

He was subsequently assaulted and suffered a broken nose and ribs and needed treatment in hospital.

GMP said today (5 October) that a 24-year-old man has now been arrested but they are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector John Davies, said: “This is a serious assault in which the victim sustained significant, but not life-threatening, injuries.

“GMP takes assaults such as this extremely seriously and we will be supporting the victim as the investigation progresses, to ensure his wellbeing.

“We are asking if anyone has any images or videos of the incident that took place at the football pitches in Platt Bridge on Sunday, to get in touch with us.
