Referee assault in Wigan: man arrested after incident at Wigan Rose vs Platt Bridge game

Police have arrested a 24-year-old man today on suspicion of assault following an attack on a referee in a football game.

Dave Bradshaw was in charge of the South Lancs Counties fixture between Wigan Rose vs Platt Bridge on Sunday when he gave a red card to a Platt Bridge player.

He was subsequently assaulted and suffered a broken nose and ribs and needed treatment in hospital.

GMP said today (5 October) that a 24-year-old man has now been arrested but they are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector John Davies, said: “This is a serious assault in which the victim sustained significant, but not life-threatening, injuries.

GMP takes assaults such as this extremely seriously and we will be supporting the victim as the investigation progresses, to ensure his wellbeing.
