Eight nostalgic photos celebrating Manchester folk’s seaside holidays in the 1970s

Oh we did like to be beside the seaside as these fab old photos from the archives show.

In the days before cheap flights and package holidays, folk from Greater Manchester used to take their holidays at seaside resorts - and have a brilliant time.

Long before Ryanair was a thing and we had no clue where Ibiza was, we used to pack our buckets and spades and make sure we got to the beach early to secure a deckchair.

If you were lucky, you might also get a bag of chips and a ride on a donkey! Popular spots to visit in their heyday included Blackpool, Morecambe and Southport, which is featured here in our photo gallery. Here we take a nostalgic look back at some fun photos showing how we used to holiday, with photos taken from our archive in 1970 all showing Greater Manchester folk enjoying Southport.
