The incident happened after a busy weekend in Moss Side which saw thousands of people gather to celebrate Manchester Caribbean Carnival in nearby Alexandra Park.

Police have cordoned off Princess Parkway and Claremont Road and have asked people to avoid the area.

It comes around two weeks after a 16-year-old girl was hurt in a gun incident in Quinney Crescent in Moss Side, though police have said they do not think the incidents are linked at this stage.

“Whilst the investigation is ongoing and at its early stages, we’re working extremely hard to understand the full circumstances.

“Our response has included increased patrols in the immediate area to keep the community safe, whilst a lot of work has been undertaken overnight and will continue today.

“Any details that may help us is asked to get in touch, as we know there were a number of potential witnesses to this serious incident.”

Detective Superintendent David Meeney added: ““We are appealing to anyone who was in the Claremont Road area in the early hours of this morning, who may have seen something that could help us in tracking down the perpetrator(s). We know there had to be witnesses to this offence, as people made their way home from Moss Side Carnival.
