Home should be a place where you can relax, unwind and de-stress from your day - then get a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately that’s not always the case in Manchester, especially if you have a noisy neighbour, roadworks outside your house or a business keeping a racket late at night.
Fortunately there is something you can do about it - and 5,454 complained to Manchester city council last year about noise, a Freedom of Information request shows. The figure is actually down somewhat from 2021 when 7,158 people complained about noise nuisance, perhaps due some of us being home more often during the pandemic.
In 2022, the most common reason for complaints across Manchester was domestic noise - which include people, parties, loud music, DIY, and loud TV/radios. That was followed by barking dogs, noisy pubs and students making noise. There were also some complaints about alarms going off, construction din and roadworks.
You can report a noise nuisance by contacting Manchester city council’s environmental department.
But where were the most noise reports in the city of Manchester? Here are Manchester’s 10 noisiest streets and what complaints were made about in each road.

1. Egerton Road
This road in Fallowfield attracted 42 noise complaints, the bulk of them about students, last year and was also the most complained about road in 2021. | google
2. Burton Road
This street in Withington was not among the most complained about in 2021, but in 2022 there were 31 complaints, mostly about domestic noise and alarms going off. | google
3. Wilmslow Road
This long and busy street, which is home to a raft of takeaways and late night businesses, attracted 29 complaints - the bulk of them were 18 domestic noise like parties and neighbours. | google
4. Amherst Road
This street in Fallowfield attracted 18 complaints about student noise and 10 about domestic dins in 2022. | google
