Sir Bobby Charlton’s funeral and Old Trafford procession - times and where you can pay your respects

Manchester United have confirmed details of the memorial service to celebrate the life of Sir Bobby Charlton. The Man United and England great died on October 21 at the age of 86 and the world of football continues to pay tribute to an absolute titan of the game.

When and where is Sir Bobby Charlton's memorial service?  

A memorial service will take place for Sir Bobby at Manchester Cathedral starting at 2pm on Monday November 13. It is expected that up to 1,000 guests will attend the cathedral to pay their respects to Sir Bobby and celebrate his incredible life.

The service will be led by Canon Nigel Ashworth and include eulogies by family members and the football club. It will remain private and will not be broadcast or filmed.

When is the procession past Old Trafford?

The club has said that the procession will go past Old Trafford to provide ‘a moment of reflection and provide an opportunity for fans to say a final farewell to a true Manchester United legend.’ Those coming to Old Trafford are advised to use the E2 car park and arrive at the East Stand forecourt from 1pm, with the funeral procession expected to pass in front of the Trinity Statue at 1.30pm. The funeral cortege will the travel on to the cathedral.

What have Sir Bobby's family said?

According to United "the Charlton family and Manchester United would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and respect towards Sir Bobby."

The family request no flowers. Instead, if you wish to donate in lieu of flowers, the charities close to Sir Bobby and his family's hearts are the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation, The Children's Adventure Farm Trust (CAFT), Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer's UK.

What will happen to all the tributes laid at Old Trafford?

United have previously acknowledged the huge numbers of floral tributes left by people at Old Trafford. They have said that the memorabilia placed by mourning fans has been carefully relocated to the Old Trafford Museum and will join the tributes left by fans following the passing of Sir Matt Busby in 1994. 

In addition, all the plastic will be removed from the floral tributes and will be recycled, and the flowers will be composted and used in the gardens at United’s Carrington Training Complex.

Tributes to continue for Sir Bobby Charlton

The FA will pay tribute to the 1966 World Cup winner at their friendly against Malta on Friday, November 17. Gareth Southgate started his England press conference on November 9 with his own tribute to the United great.

“Respected around the world and clearly our greatest ever player when you think of not only the World Cup, but winning the European Cup," the England manager said. “Very sad. We were fortunate to have met him a few times and incredibly humble, so yes our condolences to all family and hopefully we get the chance to honour him in a celebration of life (against Malta) because he absolutely deserves that.”
