Greater Manchester bin collection dates: Christmas and New Year 2021 changes & how to recycle Christmas trees

Bolton Council: There will be no changes to waste and recycling bin collections this year.

For a charge of £16 the council will to collect and recycle a real Christmas tree. Call 01024 336632 before Friday 7 January to arrange a collection.

Alternatively, you can take your Christmas tree free of charge to the tip.

Bury Council: There will be no changes to blue, green or grey bin collections. There will be no brown bin collections from 20 to 31 December, however.

Real Christmas trees can be recycled in your brown bin minus any decorations or wooden bases. You must chop it up so it fits inside your brown bin with the lid fully closed. Alternatively, you can take it to one of the local household waste and recycling centres.

Manchester Council: Bin collection days will not change over Christmas and New Year. You can recycle your real Christmas tree in January by leaving it beside your green bin on the usual collection day, or taking it to your nearest recycling centre. If you live in a flat or apartment, the council advises you speak to your caretaker or building manager. If this is not possible, email to: [email protected] with your name and address, a description of the location where you’ll leave the tree and when you’ll be putting it there.

Oldham Council: There will be no changes to bin collections.

You can recycle your Christmas tree in your green bin – just chop it into small pieces, remove the wooden block from the base and any decorations.

Alternatively, take it to your local tip or to one of the following recycling ‘drop off’ points from December 29 until January 31:

• Higher Memorial Park (car park), Joseph Street, Failsworth (open dawn until dusk)
• Royton Park (car park) off Bleasdale Street, Royton. Anytime access
• Werneth Park (car park) off Frederick Street, Werneth (open dawn until dusk)
• Churchill Playing Fields (car park), Wellington Road, Greenfield. Anytime access.

Rochdale Council: there are no planned bin collection changes over Christmas and New Year. You can recycle your Christmas tree by chopping it up and putting it in your brown recycling bin. The trunk needs to be thinner than your wrist and the lid must shut. Or you can take it to these drop-off points from 4-9 January 2022.

Salford Council: no planned bin collection changes over Christmas and New Year. You can you can recycle your Christmas tree in your garden and food waste bin if it is chopped up or take it to your local recycling centre.

Stockport Council: The council is asking residents to make sure bins are left out before 7am on the normal collection day. Real Christmas trees can be recycled by chopping them up to compost in your green bin. Alternatively, they can be taken them to a local Household Waste and Recycling Centre.

Tameside Council: There will be no brown bin collections from 27 December to 7 January. There are also the following changes to collections on the bank holidays:

• Monday 27 December: If you are due a Green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Wednesday 29 December. If you are due a Black (co-mingled recycling waste) or a Blue (Paper recycling waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Friday 31 December.

• Tuesday 28 December: If you are due a Green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Thursday 30 December. If you are due a Black (co-mingled recycling waste) or a Blue (Paper recycling waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Tuesday 4 January.

• Monday 3 January: If you are due a Black (co-mingled recycling waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Wednesday 5 January. If you are due a Green (general waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Thursday 6 January. If you are due a Blue (Paper recycling waste) bin collection, it will be collected on Friday 7 January.

You can leave your tree next to your brown food and garden bin from Monday 10 January.

Trafford Council: You can check individual streets on the council website here.

You can chop up your Christmas tree and put it in your green bin. Trees left beside the bin won’t be collected. Alternatively, you can go to your local recycling centre - or visit one of these drop-off points.

Collection points are open from Sunday 2 January until Monday 17 January. You can drop your real tree at the following locations:

• Cross Lane Park Car Park – Moss Lane
• Flixton Park Car Park – Flixton Road
• Hullard Park Yard – Northumberland Road
• Longford Park Car Park – Rye Bank Road
• Stamford Park Car Park – Stamford Park Road
• Walkden Gardens Car Park – Derbyshire Road

Wigan Council: The council has asked residents to ensure that numbered bins are put at the normal collection point by 6.30am

Green bin collections over the Christmas period will be suspended to allow the council to prioritise the collection of the other bins.
