Organisers have sent their “heartfelt condolences”.

A man has died after falling ill during the Great Manchester Run on Sunday. The 40-year-old runner reportedly received medical treatment but later died in hospital.

Organisers the Great Run Company said: "The entire team involved in organising the Great Manchester Run extends their heartfelt condolences to the participant's family and friends."

The 21st edition of the event saw 30,000 participants take part and around 100,000 spectators line the streets of Sunday for the half marathon and 10k.

Mayor Andy Burnham as well as stars from Coronation Street and Emmerdale were among the thousands taking part and raising money for charity alongside the elite runners.
